Announcement

October 21st-23rd, 2022
Circuit of the Americas
Austin, TX

Hello everyone in the Berg Brigade,

I am excited to write you all this newsletter for a special occasion. I will be attending my very first Formula 1 race this weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Not only will I be attending, but I will be racing as well!

I am excited to announce I will be racing an Elan DP-02 IMSA Mazda Prototype Lites car for Competent Motorsports, supported by Penn Elcom Online and Rohde & Liesenfeld Inc.

I will be racing alongside Mark and Phil Stratford of Penn Elcom Online. They will be my main competition, as they are both also in DP-02s.  We will be racing against some legendary cars, including a Pescarolo LMP1 and a Lotus 87B. Those are just two of many extremely legendary cars. The entry list is below, so you can click on it to see the variety of historic cars from many different eras.

Entry List

I have had some testing in this car at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta and feel more than ready to be racing wheel to wheel at speeds of upwards of 150MPH. This is by far the fastest car I have driven. But although 220HP sounds like a fair bit for only 1600LBS, I can assure you that on the long 1.1 mile straightaway… I will feel very underpowered. Since the entry list of the Historic Masters has a large variety of different types of cars – from Corvette GT2s to historic Formula 1 car, and 47 cars in total – it will be a packed weekend.
Not only will this be a great learning experience, but it will prepare me for the final round of the F4 U.S. Championship Powered by Honda in a few weeks’ time, which is also at Circuit of the Americas!

On my race car, you will notice a new logo on the rear wing. That is the logo of Rohde & Liesenfeld Inc. R&L is a Project Freight Forwarding company out of Vancouver, BC. After meeting one of the owners of the company (Jan Beringer) six years ago at the “Allen Berg Racing Schools GP Experience” (in which we used a 1998 Benneton B198 ex-F1 car owned by Phil Stratford of Penn Elcom) to run a Formula 1 driving experience. After losing contact with Jan for many years, somehow, the universe has brought us back together to partner in my “First Formula 1 event”. Jan was one of the drivers who took the GP experience back in 2016.

Below is a quote from Jan Beringer, co-owner of R&L:
“Rohde & Liesenfeld is proud to be sponsoring Alex Berg as a hugely talented emerging driver.  Our company provides mission-critical supply chain and logistics services to clients worldwide.  Motorsports defines mission-critical, where the on-time movement of race cars, parts, tires, equipment, and support personnel are all critical to the success of the driver.  We look forward to many wins in our association with Alex and his team.”

The next time I come back to the US GP, I want to be on the Formula 1 grid. The problem is, that is what everyone else my age wants! For now, I am grateful for the opportunity to be racing on the same weekend as Formula 1. I want to extend my thanks to my partners, Phil and Mark Stratford of Penn Elcom Online and Jan of R&L. Without their continued support of them, I would not be writing this newsletter for this event this weekend.

Another reason I am excited is that I will be doing a track walk at the same time as the Formula 1 team.  Hopefully, I will be able to meet my longtime idol, Sebastian Vettel. Although I cannot quite remember why he is my favorite, I am told that as a kid, I loved the look of the Red Bull F1 cars in the V8 Era.

Even though I am not racing for the like of Scuderia Ferrari, AMG Mercedes F1, or Honda Red Bull Racing yet… the keyword in that sentence is “yet”. I cannot speak about what I will be doing in terms of meetings off-track this weekend, but I can assure you all that positive things are to come in the near future.

Unfortunately, there is no live timing for this event, but you can follow my results on my social media platforms which are listed below.

Excited to be getting back to doing what I do best – driving.
Cheers!
Alex Berg
